If you decide to travel in winter while in Russia, using a car is not a very good idea. It is too cold, there is a lot of snow everywhere and a day is very short. Let us see what it means to travel by Russian railways.

When one buys tickets he never knows actually what train he will get. You can be either very lucky or unlucky. The last situation is revealed in the post.

First, there were no electricity. According to a passenger car attendant, the electricity will appear after the train pick up speed. She was right but not every compartment had good lamps in them, so many passengers were still sitting in the dark.

Windows didn’t save passengers from the cold wind.

Blankets looked awful.

Nobody could lock the door as it needed repairs.

The floor was too dirty.

Not many people will agree to sleep on the beds.

The switchers didn’t work at all.

As the quantity of the toilet paper remained the same, not many people were brave enough to use the WC.

It was very cold inside though it was -5 degrees Celsius in the street.

RZD, thank you for a wonderful trip!

I was in Russia for the last two weeks and during last summer where I took several (12-33h) trains. This doesn’t really reflect my experience, although the quality of the trains differs, most of them are clean and good. In fact, Russian trains are designed in an incredible smart way are and of much more comfort than other European night trains.
But yeah, as the post says, this was probably an unlucky situation.
I have always wanted to travel by train through Russia and Ukraine, but my wife says that she’s done it too many times and will not do it again. lol
Are those bumps on the toilet seat for those that like to stand on them? (squat?) Looks like a dual use type toilet.
No. The fact they are foot shaped is merely a coincidence.
While in Russia I spent plenty of times on trains experiencing everything from the first-class cabin all the way to platzkart. While it is true that the WC can get a bit nasty for the most part it was a pleasant experience. Cabins and bedding were always clean and fresh, and the morning tea after an all-night run was a nice touch.
While any large operation can have substandard equipment, IME the train depicted in this post was the exception.
Now if you REALLY want to see what train travel can be like in Russia, try the Nevsky Express!
dreadful. this train needs to be sent to the scrap yard.
At least there’s a toilet paper. Some progress since soviet times, at least.
Simply awful. Sounds smarter just to fly.
Aeroflot
Actually, you could pay more for a “deluxe train” (not sure about the translation, kind of first class flight) where you get much greater chance of being lucky.
old photos, nothing more.
Most of the RZD trains is new right now.
You can see this shit if you travel to 2005.
